On February 22, 1931, Jesus appeared to a polish nun named Sister Maria Faustina. He appeared in her room wearing a white garment with red and white rays shooting out from His heart. She later wrote the exact message Jesus gave her:
Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: “Jesus I trust in You.” I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel and then throughout the world.
Three years later, she found an artist to paint the first Divine Mercy image under her strict guidance. After Sister Faustina died, this powerful message of Divine Mercy began to spread throughout the Catholic Church with the publication of her diary and the mass distribution of the Divine Mercy Image.
Sister Faustina was canonized as a Catholic Saint in the year 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and devotion to the Divine Mercy image and prayers remains one of the most popular devotions observed among Catholics today.
