A note from the artist:
The sunflower has long been held as the national flower of Ukraine, but since Russia invaded their country recently, the plant has become a global symbol of resistance, solidarity and hope.
In the summer of 1996, sunflowers were planted by officials at the pervomaysk missile base in souther Ukraine to mark the removal of weapons from their country.
I painted this image of Mary kissing a Sunflower to symbolize her love for her Ukrainian children, who are suffering greatly. Her crown is also adorned in sunflowers and her halo is blue and yellow for the Ukrainian flag. Her mantle is also decorated in Ukrainian Folk style designs.
Please use this image to pray for peace in Ukraine through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
